This October we went to Nepal. Nepal is on the continent of Asia, and has the Himalayan Mountain Range. It has the biggest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. Nepal is quite a poor country but the people are very friendly. We flew to Kathmandu, the capital city. Nick’s father flew from England to meet us there. We stayed for a few days to do some shopping and go to a monkey temple. Kathmandu is a very busy city.
After Kathmandu, we flew to the town of Pokhara. We went in a small plane over the mountains. I hate flying and was really scared. Pokhara is a very beautiful place close to the mountains with a big lake. We took a boat out onto the lake so we could look at the mountains.

Pokhara is a very beautiful place close to the mountains with a big lake. We took a boat out onto the lake so we could look at the mountains. We stayed in Pokhara for one night and then set off on a walk. We went for a long walk. It took us 10 days! We would walk for about 6-8 hours every day.

Nick, Eric (Nick’s dad) and me would get up at 7.00 and have breakfast. We would start walking at about 7.30. We would stop for lunch and then walk until around 2.00-3.00 in the afternoon. Each night we would sleep in a different place higher up the mountain. We slept in small ‘tea houses’. You stay in a small room with a really hard bed. The toilet was outside. It was very, very cold at night inside the room. You have to sleep in all your clothes and in a warm sleeping bag.

We were walking up into the mountains. We walked uphill for 6 days. It was difficult and we got very tired. One day we had to walk up nearly 2000 stairs. There are no cars or roads going up the mountain. All the food that you eat up the mountain has to be carried up by donkeys and people.

We walked up to 4130 metres. This is quite high and it was sometimes a little difficult to breathe. There is less oxygen in the air high up. You get tired more quickly. It was also very cold at 4130 metres, there was snow. We had walked up to Annapurna Base Camp. This is not the top of the mountain, it was only halfway! But to go any higher up you need to be a proper mountain climber. It gets dangerous. Mount Annapurna is very high, it’s over 8000 metres.

It took us 6 days to walk up, but only 2 days to walk down. I found walking down scary. I was afraid of slipping and falling off the edge and down the side of the mountain. We were very tired when we finished and glad to get to the hotel with soft beds and hot water.
Nepal is a really beautiful place, and I can’t wait to go back. Next time I want to do a longer walk that takes about 21 days and goes up to over 5000 metres.
